Two new subunits of the NMDA subtype of glutamate receptor (NMDAR) have been identified, NR3A and NR3B, with NR3B likely being the final member of the NMDAR family. These subunits show high sequence homology, although different distribution patterns: NR3B is expressed predominately in motor neurons, while NR3A is more widely distributed. When expressed in Xenopus oocytes, NR3A or NR3B assemble with NR1 to form excitatory glycine receptors that are unaffected by glutatmate.
