Nucleoprotein (N protein/ Nucleocapsid protein) is one of four structural proteins of Coronavirus (SARS-Cov, SARS-Cov-2, MERS amongst other). The N protein primary function is to package the viral SARS-Cov-2 RNA genome within the viral envelope to form the helical nucleocapsid.
N protein is a major immunogen and is highly expressed in infected cells at the early stage of infection.
