The OKT8 monoclonal antibody specifically recognizes the human CD8a molecule, a cell surface receptor of approximately 32-34 kDa. CD8a is expressed either as a heterodimer with the CD8 beta chain (CD8αβ) or as a homodimer (CD8αα). It is found on the majority of thymocytes, as well as on a subset of mature T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. CD8a interacts with MHC class I molecules and, through its association with the protein tyrosine kinase p56lck, plays a crucial role in T-cell development and activation.
