The OKT3 monoclonal antibody targets an epitope on the epsilon subunit of the human CD3 complex. Known for its potent immunosuppressive properties, it has been used effectively to treat renal, heart, and liver allograft rejection. The CD3 complex, composed of gamma, delta, and epsilon subunits, is essential for TCR assembly, transport, and surface expression. CD3 is expressed on thymocytes during development and on all mature T cells. TCR crosslinking triggers intracellular signaling pathways leading to cell activation and proliferation.
