Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, or ACE2, is a protein bound to the plasma membrane of lungs, arteries, heart, kidney, and
intestines cells. ACE2 plays an important role in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), and a major physiological
role in the regulation of the heart, kidney and blood pressure.
ACE2 is also the cellular receptor for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome – coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that is causing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
