Human Glycophorin A (GYPA) is a 151 aa type I transmembrane sialoglycoprotein highly expressed on the surface of erythrocytes and erythroid precursor cells. It is characterized by extensive O-linked glycosylation of its extracellular domain, which contributes to the strong negative surface charge of red blood cells. Glycophorin A carries the MN blood group antigens and plays an important role in erythrocyte membrane organization, stability, and cell–cell interactions. It is widely used as a specific molecular marker of the erythroid lineage and erythroid maturation.
