ABOUT US

Covalab - 11 avenue Albert Einstein - 69100 Villeurbanne - France
In the biotechnology industry where the creation of any start-up depends on the input of the investors and on the fluctuations of the stock market, Covalab stands out as an exception.
Indeed, with a minimum of initial capital and the assistance of University Claude Bernard (Lyon), the company developed slowly using as its foundation its know-how in Immunochemistry.

The principal aim of its founding members (Dr. Saïd El Alaoui & Dr. Vincent Thomas) was to achieve national and international credibility. This is an original concept, a slow but worthwhile process, on the condition that it evolves according to the needs of the industry and remains firmly rooted in practical achievements.

Covalab principal activity, which has allowed it to attain complete financial independence, is that devoted to the development of monoclonal & polyclonal antibodies destined for research, diagnosis and therapeutics.

Some of the antibodies developed for pharmaceutical companies are among products having a strong potential for clinical application. Covalab also has its own wide range of products for research and diagnosis in areas as varied as cancer, neuroscience, auto-immune diseases, to mention only a few.

In biomedicine

In biomedicine, the service activity of Covalab represents but the tip of the scientific and technical iceberg which the team at Covalab has put together. Indeed, the scientists at Covalab have more than 20 years of experience in the chemical modification of antigens and antibodies destined for diagnosis and therapy.

A list, by no means complete of some of their achievements, includes the production of:

  • antibodies directed against new tumour markers
  • antibodies as gene vectors in cancerology
  • antibodies kits for detecting patients with cerebral protein aggregates in neurology
  • diagnostic kits for detecting patients with autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis and celiac disease.

In agro food, the development of complete diagnostic kits including the antibodies and the chemically modified immunogens for the detection of mycotoxins, phycotoxins, pesticides and polyaromatic hydrocarbons.

Leading-edge technology

Some of the products and activities described above have been developed in response to the requests of clients or as off-shoots of fundamental research projects carried out in collaboration with academics in University laboratories, others, as a result of its own research projects.
These last two activities have led to:
  • the filing of three patent applications in France, one of which as been extended wordwide.
  • Covalab's intellectual and practical paticipation (not simply as a supplier of reagents) in many publications, concerned primarily with elucidating the role of the transglutaminases and of their reaction products in different pathological states.

The successful completion of its own in-house research programmes now permits Covalab to offer potential clients its recently improved know-how in two areas which are crucial to productivity in diagnosis and therapeutics:
  • Rapidity: the development of mouse monoclonal antibodies in six weeks instead of 6-8 months
  • Specificity: a procedure for specifically measuring antibody titres in an autoimmune disease and which reduces, if not totally eliminates, interference from the non-specific adsorption of irrelevant immunoglobulin.
